Mannitol is what is known as a sugar alcohol. It is used as an osmotic diuretic in the prevention or treatment of excess body water in certain kidney conditions, reducing swelling of the brain, or reducing pressure in the eye. It works by increasing the amount of fluid excreted by the kidneys and helps the body to decrease pressure in the brain and eyes. It is also been found in illicit drugs as a bulking agent.
Identified in Sweden: 7-chloro-5-(2-fluorophenyl)-1,3-dihydro-1,4-benzodiazepin-2-one (norfludiazepam). Norfludiazepam is a benzodiazepine and is structurally related to the internationally controlled substance diazepam.
